Course content
|
A brief survey of the evolution of French language from Vulgar Latin up to the presence. Explanation of basic notions connected with the evolution of language. Internal and external factors of the language evolution. Convergent and divergent evolution. Substrate, superstrate and adstrate. Main phonological changes (phonologisation, dephonologisation, syncope, apocope, prothesis, epenthesis, analogy and other changes - combinatory changes as assimilation, dissimilation, metathesis, contraction). The attention will be paid to other levels of language. Differences between classical Latin and Vulgar Latin. The historical events leading to the Romanisation. Gaulish language and Gaulish borrowings in French. Germanic influences, including Norman borrowings. Arabic expansion in Europe.

Learning outcomes
|
The first part of two-semestral course which will provide a brief survey of the evolution of French language from Vulgar Latin up to the present time, with respect to the external and internal history the language.
Mastery of the subject matter within the scope defined in the Course Objectives. The ability to understand texts from this field.

Written exam
