Course content
|
Themes discussed: 1. Selected chapters from the history of linguistics I (pre-scientific period of linguistics, comparative and historical grammar of the 19th century) 2. Selected chapters from the history of linguistics II (current tendencies in modern linguistics - structuralism, functional linguistics, descriptivism, generative grammar) 3. Linguistic disciplines 4. Semantics and semiotics 5. Rhetoric, etymology and stylistics 6. Dialectology 7. Mathematical linguistics 8. Psycholinguistics 9. Textual linguistics 10. Sociolinguistics, ethnolinguistics, philosophy of language The individual themes are discussed in the seminars with the help of authentic texts and exercises written in French.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this course is to introduce students to a general linguistics terminology and basic language concepts. After this class, the students should gain basic preparation for specialized lectures and seminars that they will participate in during their following years of study (morphology, syntax, lexicology, etc.)
The student will master the skills specified in the course objectives, which is mainly the ability to read and critically reflect on texts from the field of general linguistics.

The students are required to pass the course Introduction to Linguistics 1.

Oral exam, Student performance
The student needs to be present in class, prepare systematically for the seminars, study the required specialized texts and have a presentation in class in order to pass the class.
