Course content
|
The first part of the course focuses on the main notions from the field of general linguistics, taking into account the Romance languages and in particular the French language. The main issues include the functions of language, communication process, origin of language and the evolution of the respective levels of language (in particular the phonetic modifications, the evolution of grammar, the vocabulary - word formation and semantic changes). Differences between the written and the spoken forms of the language. Evolution of the writing systems. Genetic, sociolinguistic and typological classification of languages.

Learning outcomes
|
The objective of the course is to acquaint the students with basic terms and concepts from the field of general linguistics so that they would be able to independently and critically read the texts from the the field of linguistics.
Mastery of the subject matter within the scope defined in the Course Objectives. The ability to read and critically approach the texts from the field of general linguistics.

Written exam
Active participation in class and the fulfilment of all the assignments set by the teacher.
