Course content
This course will cover the following topics: 1. French Boulevard as a historical term 2. The phenomenon of Boulevard theatre and its development 3. Morphology of Boulevard theatre genres 4. Eugene Scribe and "piece bien faite" 5. Eugene Labiche - the father of modern French comedic boulevard theater 6. The French Belle-Epoque and its icon, Georges Feydeau 7. Jean Anouilh as a modern follower of the boulevard theatre traditions 8. Playwrights of the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century: Marc Camoletti and Jean Poiret 9. The text of a play and theatre play 10. The text of a play and a film adaptation: the interdisciplinary level of the works 11. Playwright, director and actor Francis Veber 12. Presentation of papers on the chosen topic and final summarizing discussion

Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to make the students familiar with the contemporary popular-dramatic genre in the context of its most important development stages, with the emphasis on the interdisciplinarity.
1/ to understand better the phenomenon of the Boulevard theatre in the social context 2/ to perfection the ability to work with literary terminology 3/ to improve the ability to interpret a text as a structure of meaning, to apply different historical and current approaches to literary analysis on particular texts 4/ to develop the ability of interdisciplinary scholarly discussion

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Written exam

1/ regular attendance and active participation in the seminars (mandatory attendance 75%) 2/ preparation for each class, knowledge of the text to be analysed 3/ presentation of a professional paper on the chosen topic The exam will test the understanding of the history and theory of the given genre.
