Course content
|
Formation and development of semiotics and semantics. Classificatioin of signs according to various authors. Sign systems. Structure of the linguistic sign. Structuralist semantics. Status of word in French. Arbitrariness and motivation of the linguistic sign. Assymetry of linguistic sign. Semantic modifications and their causes - semantic generalisation, specialisation, melioration and degradation.

Learning outcomes
|
The objective of the course is to acquaint the students with basic concepts of the traditional and modern semantics and semiotics, with the formation and development of the disciplines and the main fields of the semantic - or semiotic - research. The emphasis is put on the linguistic sign in the structuralist perspective. In addition, the course deals with main types of semantical modifications of the French vocabulary.
The ability to understand basic terms and concepts from the field of French semantics and the ability to read and critically perceive the text from the field of French semantics.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Student performance, Dialog
Active participation in classwork, the fulfilment of all the assignments set by the teacher in course of the semester and submission of a semestral thesis.
