Course content
1. Basic literary terminology and critical studies generally related to the role of comedy and laughter in dramatic creation. (Definition of the comic in Aristotle's Poetics, Stendhal's essay on laughter, Mauron's psychocritical interpretation, Henri Bergson and his models of situational comedy, the social mission of laughter, Bakhtin's concept). 2. Medieval farces 3. Moli?re as the author of character comedy and creator of the "black comedian". 4. Laughter in 18th century theatrical creation: Regnard, Lesage, authors of character and moral comedies, Nivelle de la Chaussée and his "comédie larmoyante". Beaumarchais, Marivaux. 5. Laughter in Musset's comedies and proverbs, language comedy. 6. French boulevard theater, transformations of vaudeville in the 19th century - Scribe, Labiche, Feydeau, the dominant position of intrigue. 7. Alfred Jarry and his absurd comedian. 8. Jean Anouilh as the heir to Moli?re's comedy and Labichov's vaudeville. 9. Elements of the comic in the plays of the New Theatre, Ionesco, Beckett.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to familiarize students in detail with the theory of the comic and its application to plays from the main developmental stages of French comic drama from the Middle Ages to the present day.
understanding the development of laughter culture in the history of French drama deepening the ability to work with literary terminology improving the ability to interpret a text as a meaning structure, applying various methods of literary analysis to a specific dramatic text developing the ability to engage in professional polemics

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Seminar Work

The condition for completing the course is regular attendance, active participation in lectures and seminars, knowledge of the analyzed texts and study of relevant professional literature. The exam tests orientation in the literary history of the given time period and in literary theory.
