Course content

1. The Creole languages on the Caribbean islands. 2. Language contact between French, English and Spanish in the Caribbean. 3. Phonetic, phonological, morphological syntactic and lexical particularities of the Haitian French. 4. Phonetic, phonological, morphological syntactic and lexical particularities of the French spoken in Guadeloupe. 5. Phonetic, phonological, morphological syntactic and lexical particularities of the French language in Martinique.

Learning outcomes
|
This course deals with the linguistic situation, the status and the particularities of the French language in Latin America. As for the diachrony, the emphasis will be placed on the historical context of transfer of the French language into the region and the origin and development of the Creole languages. The status of French as the official language, its status in legislation, judicature and education in Haiti, Guadeloupe, Martinique and French Guyana will be discussed. The students will also be familiarized with the statuses of the Creole languages based on French spoken on the isles of Dominica, Saint Lucia and Trinidad. As for the peculiarities of French used in the region, apart from phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax, the focus will be put mainly on the lexical level. Loan words, derived neologisms, composition and semantic particularities of the local varieties of French will be presented.
1) To understand the development of French and the Creole languages in the region. 2) To be able to work with texts from the given region. 3) To become familiar with an important part of the "Francophonie". 4) To develop the ability of scholarly discussion.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Written exam
1) Regular attendance and active participation in the lectures and seminars. 2) Preparation for each lesson, knowledge of the analysed text. The credit test will verify the student's understanding of the basic sociolinguistic and dialectological issues in the studied field.
