Course content
|
1. Comparison of the phonetic systems of Czech and French. 2. Written language. Script and its development. Orthography (comparison of Czech, French). Grapheme inventory. 3. Phonetic typology of world languages. Tones. Clicks. 4. International phonetic alphabet. Phonetic transcriptions. Exercises. 5. Description of the phonological system of contemporary French. Vowels: place of articulation, manner of articulation, degree of aperture, labiality. Consonants: place of articulation, manner of articulation. 6. Coarticulation phenomena: assimilation, syncope, apheresis and apocope, epenthesis and prosthesis, metathesis and differentiation. Exercises. 7. The question of the arbitrariness of the sign and phonosymbolism. 8. Development of the French language and pronunciation. The origins of the French language.

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the synchronic description of the sound plan of French.

Completion of the course is conditioned by the student's presence in class, systematic preparation for individual lessons, and studying relevant professional literature. The written exam tests knowledge of the material covered.
