Course content
Syllabicity and accent in Romance languages. Creation of the rhyme and of rhyme sets. The verse of the old-French epics and of the chivalry romances: decasyllabus and alexandrine. Occitanic lyric poetry, its verses and metric forms. The trobar clus. Franco-Venetian poetry. Sicilian and Tuscanian poetry. New forms: sonetto, terzina, etc. The coexistence with prose: the prosimetrum. Poetry forms in Romance literatures of Renaissance. Baroque metric forms. Classicism and models of Classical Antiquity. The revolution of romantic poetry. Free forms and free verse. Metric forms in the poetry of the 20th century, avant-garde tendencies, literature experiments. Notes on the aesthetic of the rhyme. Technique and conventions in translating the Romance poetry in Czech.

Learning outcomes
The course expounds the principles and the development of Romance versification since the medieval versification of the first Romance literature languages to the free verse.
The capability to notice the common foundation of Romance versology; to identify metric forms and to analyze the verse in Romance literatures; to determine the dating of a text; to analyse the method of the Czech translation of a piece of Romance poetry.
Prerequisites
Excellent knowledge of at least one Romance literature. Excellent knowledge of at least one Romance language.
