Course content
This course will cover the following topics: 1. Ideology and literary production in the beginning of the 20th century. Bergson, Maurras, Alain. 2. The reflection of the WWI in poetry and novels. The large novel frescos: Romains, Duhamel, Martin du Gard. 3. The novel between the two wars and its changes. Proust ? searching for the answers to how to escape from the destruction, from time. The elasticity and the relativity of time; the architectural music composition. 4. Gide: the principle of individualism, the requirement of sincerity, truthfulness, authenticity, innovation of novel technique. 5. The novelists of energy and action: Malraux, Montherlant and Saint-Exupéry. 6. The novelists of spirituality: Mauriac, Bernanos and Green. 7. Literature inspired by philosophical thinking. Sartre ? philosophy and ethics, freedom of one and incorporation in the historical reality, discontinuity, simultaneity, "l´oeil de caméra" in his narrative technique. Camus ? the absurd, revolution, humanism. 8. Innovation in narrative, the ?new? novel. Rejection of the conformity of tradition. 9. Development of poetry in the 20th century 10. Criticism and the tendencies in the 20th century. University criticism, criticism of the authors, syncretism in criticism, psychoanalytic criticism, sociological criticism, thematic criticism and formalist criticism.

Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to make the students familiar with the main literary movements of the 20th century and the main author. The emphasis is put on the development of French novel. The seminars are focused on a detailed literary-theoretical analysis of the fundamental narrative of these movements.
to understand the development of the French literature of the 20th century in the context of social and cultural changes to improve the ability to work with literary terminology to perfection the ability to interpret the text as a structure of meaning, to apply different historical and current approaches to literary analysis on particular texts to develop the ability to take part in an academic discussion
Prerequisites
It is recommended to pass first the courses ?Analysis and interpretation of a dramatic literary text?, ?Selected topics from the French drama of the 19th and 20th centuries?, ?Selected topics from contemporary French literature.?

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Seminar Work

1. regular attendance and active participation in the seminars 2. preparation for each class, knowledge of the text to be analysed The exam will test the understanding of literary history of the given epoch and the literary theory.
