Course content
|
This course will cover the following topics: 1. Ideology and literary production in the beginning of the 20th century. Bergson, Maurras, Alain. 2. The reflection of the WWI in poetry and novels. The large novel frescos: Romains, Duhamel, Martin du Gard. 3. The novel between the two wars and its changes. Proust ? searching for the answers to how to escape from the destruction, from time. The elasticity and the relativity of time; the architectural music composition. 4. Gide: the principle of individualism, the requirement of sincerity, truthfulness, authenticity, innovation of novel technique. 5. The novelists of energy and action: Malraux, Montherlant and Saint-Exupéry.

Learning outcomes
|
The objective of this course is to make the students familiar with the main literary movements of the 20th century and the main author. The emphasis is put on the development of French novel. The seminars are focused on a detailed literary-theoretical analysis of the fundamental narrative of these movements.
The acquired competences correspond with the specified objectives of the course.
