Discussed themes: 1. Social and cultural development of 19th century France. 2. French preromantic period and its characteristics. Madame de Staël. 3. François René de Chateaubriand, "mal du si?cle". 4. Romanticism and its principles, hegemony of poetry. 5. Alphonse de Lamartine, philosophical and narrative poetry. Alfred de Musset, sentimental and declamatory poetry. Alfred de Vigny, the poet of existential sentiment. Gérard de Nerval, the esoteric aspect of poetry, dream-myth, modernity. 6. Victor Hugo, poet. 7. French romantic drama, its rules and specifications. 8. Victor Hugo, dramatist. 9. Dramatists Alexandre Dumas senior, Alfred de Vigny and Alfred de Musset. 10. The novel in the romantic period. 11. Novelists Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas senior. 12. Honoré de Balzac - historian, psychologist, realist, visionary, total novel 13. Stendhal - rationalist, sensualist, psychologist.

Learning outcomes
|
The objective of this course is to make the students familiar with the main literary movements of the 19th century and the authors. The seminars are focused on a detailed literary-theoretical analysis of the principal works.
Understanding the development of French 19th century literature within the context of societal and cultural changes. Perfecting the skill of working with literary terminology, interpreting text as a meaningful structure and applying various methods of literary analysis to specific textual material.

A successful completion of the course is conditioned by the student's presence in class, systematic preparation for the individual classes, active participation in the seminars, knowledge of the analysed texts and an in-class presentation.
