Learning outcomes
This course examines the relationship between the Czech Republic and the European Union (EU). It explains the Czech Republic?s road to EU membership in 2004 and assess how EU accession has affected or changed the Czech Republic, including its domestic politics, governing institutions and public policies. It also examines how the Czech Republic has behaved as an EU member state. Although a case study of a single member state, this course sheds light on a number of broader points or issues pertaining to the EU and its member states. It also covers academic debates and knowledge about the EU and European integration, including the debates on Europeanization and the role of small states in the EU.
Ability to critically evaluate issues related to the Czech membership in the EU and its key specific aspects. Ability to work with foreign language academic and professional texts.
Prerequisites
The Czech Republic and the European Union is a one semester compulsory course for the students of the B.A. level program in Politics and European Studies. Active knowledge of English is required. The students are expected to follow regularly the developments in European politics.

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark, Written exam, Essay

Seminars and assigned readings are compulsory. Only one absence in the seminar is accepted. The students are required to regularly follow EU developments using the following sources: http://www.euractiv.com; http://www.euobserver.com; http://www.europa.eu.int; http://www.economist.com. The final mark reflects the partial requirements in the following way: final essay (40%), written test (40%) and seminar presentation (20%).
