Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to introduce students the current state and the potential of EU integration of the Western Balkans. This area consists of all former Yugoslav states (except Slovenia) and Albania, which will be subjects of individual lectures. The course will present the evolution of efforts of individual states to pursue EU integration, the conditionality of the EU, the most serious obstacles in the way towards the EU and future prognosis. The seminars will in detail consider some of the main aspects and obstacles that do not yet permit the accession of these states into the EU structures.
Students should be able to critically evaluate policy of the EU towards the Western Balkans region, the current state of integration and its prospects. Ability to work with academic texts. Critical analysis of the EU enlargement.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam

Seminars as well as seminar readings for each individual lecture are obligatory for all attending students. Only two absences are permitted during the semester. Each student prepares a PowerPoint presentation that is a prerequisite for obtaining a credit before the final oral exam.
