Learning outcomes
This one-semester Bachelor level course is open to both UPOL and exchange students. It introduces students to the intractable and complex Arab/Palestinan-Israeli conflict that has been shaping the Middle East for many decades. The course is designed as general introduction to the development of the Israeli-Arab/Palestinian relationship since the clash of Arab nationalism with Zionism during World War I until the contemporary situation. In chronological order, it examines key events and phenomena related to the conflict such as refugees, Israeli settlements. Arab-Israeli wars, the first and the second intifada or the situation in Gaza. After passing the course, students should understand the underlying causes, roots, actors and dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and have a solid background for further study of Middle Eastern issues.

Prerequisites

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam, Student performance

Each student is obliged to read ALL assigned reading PRIOR TO each seminar, put down notes of key arguments and findings of the assigned article/chapter and take them with him/her to the seminar. The lecturer can collect these notes from all students at any time, especially if students are too passive during the seminar. Each student must be prepared to answer the key question for each seminar (see below) and use relevant arguments to support that answer. Students are expected to find relevant sources of such arguments on their own. Do not rely just on assigned texts. Students might be asked anytime for a written seminar report/summary of arguments. The final written exam at the end of the semester covers lectures, seminars and readings.
