Learning outcomes
The course Diplomatic Protocol and Etiquette builds on the course Diplomacy: Development, Approaches, and Practice and introduces students to other dimensions of diplomacy with an emphasis on aspects of institutionalization and ritualization, i.e. protocol and rules governing the functioning of diplomats. The course will clarify the institutional organisation of diplomacy (foreign ministries, diplomatic missions and consulates), and attention will also be paid to the concept, personality and functions of the diplomat. A significant part of the course is devoted to the rules of etiquette in basic areas and situations of social interactions, with emphasis on diplomatic protocol specifics and context. We will focus on the rules associated with places and diplomatic occasions, diplomacy at the table (gastrodiplomacy/culinary diplomacy), as well as fashion diplomacy, dress code and dress etiquette.
