Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to lay foundations for the ability to understand in theory and with respect to social practice the substance of social communication and to understand the reasons behind and the consequences of communication interactions. The course addresses the issue of communication by looking at its technical parameters, defines the aspects of information transmission, evaluates, from the viewpoint of information theory, quality of signal transmitted and received in the process of communication as a structure with measurable rate of information content, parameterized in the communication process for transmission through environment, while it also evaluates the rate of successful reception and interpretation by subject with the given code set. Devices used in natural languages for information transmission will be shown as optimized for technical conditions of signal transmission between transmitter and receiver, or speaker and recipient. The course follows up on the course Communication Theory 1 and focuses on further aspects of communication on the level of its practical operation, introducing its production, non-verbal, para-linguistic parameters, as well as those structured by further secondary codes (non-independent sign sets such as traffic signs and light signals, clothing, design, functional purpose of tools, etc.: these sign sets are functional solely based on the connotation structure of primary code based on arbitrary relation between content and expression). The seminar views communication through the prism of social structures, communication roles determined by relations between communicators within these social structures and their influence on the system of language. Attention will subsequently be given to mediated communication in the broadest sense of the word possible, as well as to mass and media communication and their cultural dispositions. The course provides students with relevant models of communication and their possible uses in analysing communication, always discussing the issues using ample examples and illustrations.
