Learning outcomes
The course is designed as a series of guest lectures. Each guest will be (re)presenting a particular branch of modern linguistic research and each lecture will add a piece to the picture representing the contemporary linguistic landscape, including research projects of both domestic and international scholars. Prior to each lecture, students will be encouraged to do the required reading (a scholarly work or selected chapters of thereof, a journal article etc.); the reading is typically meant to provide students with enough information for them to be able to participate in a fruitful discussion. The lectures will at best parallel topics covered in Theory of grammar; alternatively, lectures can be hosted by researchers noted for recent achievements. Some of the lectures will focus on topics/areas where linguistics overlaps with natural sciences (biosemiotics, biolinguistics), on experiment-driven fields (psycholinguistics, eye-tracking testing) and on commercial analysis (semiotic analysis of commercials, classified ads etc.). The course schedule is to be decided at discretion of the guest lecturers and will vary across semesters. If the lecturer should not be available for the scheduled lecture, the class will be assisted by the instructor, either mediating a discussion on topics covered in previous lectures or priming students for upcoming lectures (through a discussion of required readings).
