Sept 30: The Zapotecan languages and the Indo-American languages Oct 1: Zapotec languages and its phonological features Oct 2: The historical phonology of Zapotec languages Oct 3: Challenges in the historical phonology of Zapotec language Zapotec is a linguistic family with high internal diversification. This family belongs to the large Otomanguean macro-family of Indo-American languages. Zapotec languages have a highly complex phonology in which tone, phonation types, vowel length, and tense - lax consonants interact. There is a long tradition of historical phonology studies for Zapotecan languages since the first historic reconstruction put forward by Morris Swadesh in 1947.

Throughout the workshop, we will discuss the most important findings and the challenges that the phonological structure of this family imposes on the reconstruction of Proto-Zapotec, especially regarding the tonal system and phonation-type interactions. 2. blok: 18. - 21.11.2024 - Professor Vinicius Romanini, Escola de Comunicaç?es e Artes, Universidade de S?o Paulo, Brasil: Advanced Peircean Semiotics and Cognition: From Sign Theory to the Taxonomy of Cognitive Capacities This advanced mini-course provides an in-depth exploration of the final phase of Charles Sanders Peirce's theory of signs, covering the period from 1904 to 1914. The course begins with an analysis of the incompleteness of Peirce's final work, followed by an overview of research in Speculative Grammar and sign classification conducted by semioticians who have sought to continue his legacy. Subsequently, Professor Vinicius Romanini's innovative approach will be presented, justifying his proposal. The course will also cover the compositional rules that enabled the creation of the periodic table of sign classes, comprising 66 classes, and will delve into the concepts of the solenoid of semiosis and semiostasis. Finally, a taxonomy of cognitive capacities will be discussed, offering participants a comprehensive and advanced view of Peircean semiotics applied to cognition.
