Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basics of semiotic theory, its terminology, the notion of modeling, its limits and place within contemporary science (at the interface of linguistics, philosophy and the natural sciences). Students will be expected to learn the core concepts of semiotics and apply them to various textual and media artifacts, and to engage with the semiotics network, which is the social fabric of the semiotics community of International Semiotics Institute comprised of the numerous conference series, the various institutions, and the communication of the many online semiotics groups.

Students will be expected to attend the majority of class sessions, to submit regular summaries of weekly readings on the moodle forum, and to post comments and replies on/to other students' posts at least three times during the semester. Evaluation will be based on a combination of attendance, participation, and the essay writing assignment. The one-paragraph essay writing proposal is due in week 7. The three-page rough draft is due in week 10. 15-minute Essay presentations will be during weeks 10 and 12. The final 5-page draft is due in the first week of Jaunary.
