Course content
1. Introduction to Music Analysis: The concept of music analysis; a brief history of the analytical approach to music. 2. Methods of Music Analysis: A brief overview of music analysis methods and the historical context in which they first came into use. 3. A Music-Analytical Approach to a Classical-Period Composition 1: An example of the analysis of a symphonic composition from the Classical period. 4. A Music-Analytical Approach to a Classical-Period Composition 2: Re-listening, Ambiguous Structural Passages. 5. A Music-Analytical Approach to a Romantic-Period Art Song: An example of the analysis of a Romantic art song. 6. A Music-Analytical Approach to a Romantic-Period Symphony: An example of the analysis of a symphonic work, interpretation of ambiguous passages. 7. Music-Analytical Approach to a Chamber Composition from the First Half of the Twentieth Century 1: Example of an analysis of a chamber composition from the first half of the twentieth century. 8. Music-Analytical Approach to a Chamber Composition from the First Half of the Twentieth Century 2: Re-listening, ambiguous structural passages. 9. A Music-Analytical Approach to Chamber Music of the First Half of the Twentieth Century 3: Interpretation of the results of the analysis in relation to a new hierarchy of musical means. 10. Learning outcomes
This course introduces into different ways of a musical structure reflection and teaches how to analyze the structure into its elements and to identify in their interplay the organization of the sream of music.
Students will be able to devise a suitable analytic approach to a song from a particular period and of a particular music style. Students will be capable of individual analysis of a song from the period of Classicism until the 20th Century. They will also be able to link their knowledge of history and theory of music with their individual listening competence.
Prerequisites
Students should be well acquainted with basic theoretical terminology on music and with history of music.

Assessment methods and criteria
Seminar Work

Sufficient and active participation in class (max. of 3 absences), students are expected to analyze a selected piece of music (pieces of music) within a homework and in a test.
