| Course content |

Students choose the topic of their study based on their academic interests and in consultation with their assigned instructor. They then present the results of their research in a seminar and participate in a discussion. 1. Types of Academic Texts: From Reviews to Monographs. The Structure of an Academic Text. Preface, Introduction, State of Sources and Literature, Main Thematic Chapters and Subchapters, Conclusion, Summary, Appendices, List of Sources and Literature 2. The Heuristic Phase of Preparing an Academic Text. Working with Sources. Music archives and museums; interviews with eyewitnesses. Musical sources held in the collections of the Czech Museum of Music, the Olomouc State District Archive, regional archives and museums, and in the estates of family members 3. Working with Czech and foreign-language literature. Evaluating literature on a given topic; criteria for scholarly publications. Using daily newspapers as literature and as sources. The most significant Czech and international music encyclopedias and terminological dictionaries as sources of music-historical and theoretical knowledge 4. Musicological literature, sheet music, and musical recordings held at the Central Library of Palacký University in Zbrojnice, the State Scientific Library in Olomouc, the National Library of the Czech Republic in Prague, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere. 5. The Linguistic Aspects of Scholarly Texts, Musical Terminology, Standard Language, Scholarly Accuracy versus Readability, and the Balance Between Scholarly Rigor and Popularization 6. Publication strategyfrom manuscript to publication in scholarly journals. Methods of historical research; early history of music 7. Timeline for working on an academic text. Methods of historical research; modern history of music 8. Argumentation in academic texts. Methods of the social history of music 9. Classification and categorization of issues in an academic text.
