Course content
1/ Developement until the 13th century, music of the last Přemyslids, christianization, sacred and secular repertoire 2/ The era of Charles IV. 3/ Hussitism 4/ The Era before the Battle of White Mountain 5/ Czech baroque (?) 6/ Czech classicism (?), emigration (?) 7/ National revival, Czech national music (?) 8/ Operatic production of the 2nd half of the 19th century 9/ Musical theatre in the 1st half of the 20th century 10/ Symphonic poems written by Czech composers 11/ Symphonies written by Czech composers 12/ Chamber music and compositions for piano 13/ Music institutions in the 19th century (theatres, concert halls, corporations, museums, festivals, publishers, etc.) 14/ Music institutions in the 20th century (record companies, associations, scientific institutes, etc.) 15/ Composers, performers (sing, violin, piano, etc.) 16/ Czechs, Germans, Jews in the 1st half of the 20th century 17/Musical life of Prague, Brno and other cities, eventually regions in the 2nd half of the 20th century

Learning outcomes
The lectures traces the development of music in Czech lands from the first known records till present. The differences between conceptions music in Bohemia, czech music, music of czech authors are explained.
Student will gain an overview of the evolution of a musical life in the Czech lands as well as of problems related to concepts of the history of Czech music. Survey of not well known and historically uncovered periods of our music history is also included.
Prerequisites
Students are expected to have knowledge of the history of European music to be able to compare the development in the Czech lands with other countries. An elementary listening experiences with compositions by B. Smetana, A. Dvořák, Z. Fibich, V. Novák, J. Suk, L. Janáček, B. Martinů and other composers of the 19th and 20th century are required.
