Course content
|
The seminar focuses on historiographical research in musicology, including heuristics, source criticism, critical reading of the available scholarly literature, and the structure of academic texts. Before the beginning of the semester, during course registration, the current seminar topic related to twentieth-century music history is published in the STAG study information system. Within the seminar, students work on research projects related to the announced topic. Individual sessions guide students through the entire research process, culminating in the preparation of a scholarly study. The course is generally offered biennially. The seminar in the summer semester of 2027 covers the following topics: 1-4. Socialist musical culture in the 1950s and 1960s; social and political developments in Czechoslovakia and the countries of the so-called Eastern Bloc during the 1950s and 1960s; composers' unions in the countries of the so-called Eastern Bloc 5-12. Work with primary sources documenting the activities of the Union of Czechoslovak Composers in the 1950s and 1960s

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to broaden students' methodological knowledge and enable them to apply theoretical knowledge to specific areas of musicological research.
After the passing this course, students will be able to: - independently select and solve problems, - gather important information on the studied issues, analyze and specify it, - collect the empirical data, systematize and process them in a methodologically correct way, - analyze the empirical material with the help of the theoretical background, - read and evaluate existing literature, choose appropriate theories, - compose written reports based on assigned points, - defense their projects.

Prerequisites
|
The course is offered only to the students of the study fields Humanities. Academic writing skills, a good knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods and basic knowledge of thesis lay-out style are assumed.

Assessment methods and criteria
|

1. Preparation of abstracts (regesta) based on: stenographic records of meetings of the Central Committee of the Union of Czechoslovak Composers from 1957-1959 and 1965-1969, and of the Third Congress of the Union of Czechoslovak Composers in 1963; other documents relating to these meetings. The abstracts will include: the main points of the presented reports; a brief summary of the discussions (who said what); summaries of other documents (apart from the stenographic records). 2. Presentation of a paper based on the primary sources studied.
