Course content
|
The first half of the semester, focusing on Vítězslav Novák, is taught by Associate Professor Křupková; the second half, focusing on Josef Suk, is taught by Dr Stratilková. Course Topics 1. Learning outcomes
|
Upon completion of the course, the student is able to: - independently interpret the works of Vítězslav Novák and Josef Suk in the context of Czech and European music at the turn of the twentieth century and during the first half of the twentieth century; - characterise the development of the compositional thought of both composers and identify the principal stylistic features of the individual periods of their creative output; - analyse selected works by Vítězslav Novák and Josef Suk in terms of form, harmony, thematic and motivic development, orchestration, and other components of musical structure; - explain the relationship of the two composers' works to contemporary aesthetic and compositional trends, particularly Late Romanticism and musical modernism.

Oral exam
