Survey of life and work of Richard Wagner, new and traditionary concepts of musical theatre in the 19th century, explanation of terms like leitmotiv, Musikdrama, Textbuch, Gesamtkunstwerk, never-ending melody, etc.

The course provides a comprehensive survey of Richard Wagner's life. Development of opinions on composition of opera is also discussed.
Students will learn the terminology related to Richard Wagner's output. They will be able to apply this terminology to the master's compositions. |

Approval of conditional course D19-1 is required. Students should have at least the elementary knowledge of the 19th century opera production.
