Course content
|
The course is designed to complement an introductory lecture on music of the 2nd half of the 18th century. It combines a listening seminar with student presentations - analytical explorations of the repertoire. 1. Introduction - definition of the period, key characteristics 2. Opera buffa (Giovanni Battista Pergolesi) 3. French opera (Jean-Philippe Rameau) 4. Opera seria and its reform (Christoph Willibald Gluck) 5. Singspiel (Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf) 6. The galant style (Johann Joachim Quantz) 7. Empfindsamkeit (Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach) 8. The Birth of the Symphony (Jan Stamic) 9. The String Quartet (Joseph Haydn) 10. The Symphony (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) 11. The Piano Sonata (Ludwig van Beethoven) 12. Italian Opera in the Czech Lands (Josef Mysliveček)

Learning outcomes

The mission of the lecture is to introduce to students the stylistic and developmental trends in European music in the 2nd half of the 18th century.
Obtaining of the reliable orientation in the historic, stylish, functional, aesthetic and theoretical issues of music of music from the second half of the 18th century.
