Course content
|
1. Criteria of the written text. A standard page, citation of bibliography, references and footnotes, the principles of computer typography, the language of academic papers. 2. Preparation for the written paper. Gathering of the information from literature and other sources, consulting catalogs. Defining the objectives and hypotheses, the thesis outline, the abstract, excerpts, notes, annotations and a resume. The work structure. A list of literature and sources, indexes, appendixes. 3. The principles of writing an academic review. An introduction of the introductory seminar paper. 4. Seminar paper: a review on an academic art theory publication. Students will be asked to devise the academic review on a publication published within the last 40 years (in the range of 3-5 pages). The work will be presented and discussed in the course. 5. Seminar paper: the state of research of the selected artwork. Heuristic approach and criticism of the sources and the literature used. Students will pick a specific artwork and they will be asked to find out the current state of the research achieved on the basis of studying the sources and the literature. Students will devise an introductory seminar paper (in the range of 7 pages), which will be presented in the course. 6. Seminar paper: regional music life. Students will devise an introductory seminar paper on the topic of regional culture life based on their studies of daily press, regional newspapers or academic periodicals. They will map out and evaluate the dramaturgy or the level of culture life in the specific region and in particular time period (in the range of 5-8 pages). The work will be presented and discussed in the course.

Learning outcomes
|
Introduction to the independent work in the field of Art Studies.
The proseminar is designed to increase students' understanding of art. The course will focus on issues like classification of art, art as a specific form of human communication, evaluation of art, theoretical reflection of art, etc. The seminar improves the competence of the students in the study of scientific literature and possibly even in foreign languages, its critical reception, and so forth. Students will be able to use the knowledge and skills gained in future seminar papers, especially when writing their diploma thesis.
