Course content
|
Following themes resumes the first course PEHK1: 1. Musical Classicism as a concept in music history and a stylistic category; Early Classicism and its centers (Mannheim, Berlin, Vienna, etc.) 2. The development of the sonata and the symphony during the Classical period 3. Opera in the second half of the 18th century 4. Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven 5. Issues surrounding Classical music in the Czech lands 6. Romanticism as a concept in music history and a stylistic category 7. Opera in the 19th century, national schools 8. Vocal and chamber music, piano pieces in the 19th century 9. The symphony and the symphonic poem in the 19th century 10. Modernism and late Romanticism, musical Impressionism 11. Musical Expressionism and the Second Viennese School 12. Musical Neoclassicism, New Objectivity, and Folkloric Inspiration in 20th-Century Music 13. The Postwar Avant-Garde of the 1950s and 1960s, the "Postmodern" Turn in Late 20th-Century Music

Learning outcomes
|
Solid orientation in characteristic features of development of European music, knowledge of both historical and theoretical background of its development. Acquaintance with main works from the origin of Gragorian chant to the beginning of Baroque style, including knowledge of biography and work of selected personalities. Analysis and listening.
Acquired knowledge: The student knows basic data of the development of music in Europe until the beginning of the Baroque period. The student is able to compare the quality of music culture in different countries of cisalpine area. The student is able to confront the development of traditional music centres with the expansion of mature 'Western European' music beyond the Alpes. Acquired skills: The student is able to choose a reliable source of information focussed on chosen parts of the history of music, The student is able to independently acquire the sought information about the history of European music. Acquired qualifications: The student reliably orientates themselves in the history of music of the European cultural area until 1600. The student is able to use the acquired knowledge in other musical-historical courses.
