Course content |
The cours is aimed at introducing the development of thinking about musical isntruments, fundamental organological terminology and issues of classification and description of musical instruments. The explanation also attempts to give a compendium of fundamental instrumental types in broad geographical and historical context. The main attitude keeps the direction of J. Montagu´s publication Origins and development of musical instruments (2007). The cours is divided into 12 lectures, at the end there is an aural and visual test and also a test aimed at checking fundamental knowledge. A seminar work is also demanded: a text describing a collection of musical instruments of own choice. 1) What is the musical instrument and how to investigate it? 2) Issues of description and classification of musical instruments. 3) Harmonic series, pitch systems, tuning 1. 4) Harmonic series, pitch systems, tuning 2. 5) The oldest musical instruments corpophones and idiophones, dance, ritual, protection. 6) Drum-type instruments membranophones. 7) Flute-type instruments. 8) Reeds. 9) Trumpet-type (lip-vibrated) instruments. 10) String instruments 1. 11) String instruments 2. 12) New musical instruments.

Learning outcomes |
The purpose of the subject is to provide an insight into the evolution of thinking on musical instruments instruments and into fundamental terminology, systematization and description.
A student gains a fundamental image of issues considering development, description and systematization of musical instruments in organology. The main instrumental types are introduced in global context through visual and aural presentations. |
