Course content
|
The course is designed as an introduction to the study of musical texts - working with sources, musical-textual criticism, the history of musical notation and an introduction to editorial work. 1. Defining the field 2. Typology of musical sources, relevance, and filiation 3. Thematic catalogues and complete editions 4. Cataloguing musical sources; music archives and libraries 5. Databases of musical sources 6. Source description: study of handwriting and watermarks 7. Types of musical editions 8. Musical paleography 1: tactile and symbolic notation 9. Musical paleography 2: Gregorian chant notation 10. Musical paleography 3: notation of medieval and Renaissance polyphony 11. Musical notation as a source for historically informed performance of 17th- and 18th-century music 12. Practical exercises in transcription, score layout, and editorial practice

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to the critique of musical notation, the history of musical notation, working with musical sources, and to acquire the basics of editorial practice.
Ability to work in musical departments of museums and archives, editorial activities - especially in the field of historical musical materials.

Prerequisites
|
Knowledge of general musical theory. Knowledge of instruments, auxiliary historical science, survey of history of music, knowledge of literature on musicology.
