Course content
|
The lecture explores the various genres and compositional techniques of the Renaissance in relation to selected composers. The individual topics are presented through examples drawn from the repertoire. 1. Introduction - definition of the topic, basic characteristics of the period 2. Isorhythm (Guillaume Dufay) 3. Proportions (Johannes Ockeghem) 4. Cantus firmus (Josquin Desprez) 5. Contrapuntal techniques (Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina) 6. Motet (Orlando di Lasso) 7. Cori spezzati (Giovanni Gabrieli) 8. Madrigal (Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa) 9. Parody (Jacobus Gallus) 10. Chanson (Clément Jannequin) 11. Lute song (John Dowland) 12. The Rudolfine Orchestra (Philippe de Monte)

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to provide students with a sound understanding of the fundamental characteristics (historical, theoretical, aesthetic and functional) of Renaissance music (15th and 16th centuries).
Students will gain knowledge of 15th- and 16th-century music (notation, major genres, leading composers).

Prerequisites
|
The course is intended for upper-year students, a prerequisite is successful completion of the course "An Overview of the History of Music".
