Learning outcomes
This course introduces European traditional music based on Jan Ling's *A History of European Folk Music* (1997). It provides an overview of the musical traditions of selected European nations and linguistic or ethnic groups, while examining the cultural and historical currents that shaped them. Furthermore, the course addresses phenomena such as folk and traditional music, world music, the folk music revival, folklorism, nationalism, and globalization. It also outlines the history of European folk music research, placing the specific characteristics of Czech folk music studies within a broader European context.
The student will acquire: 1. a body of fundamental information regarding the research and manifestations of European traditional music through lectures 2. aural experience through recordings 3. a deeper understanding of a specific phenomenon within European traditional music of their own choosing through independent study
