Course content
1. Introduction into aesthetics and general theory of art. 2. Aesthetics categories: modalities of the aesthetic, aesthetic function and value. 3. Semiotics and its relevance for aesthetics and art theory. 4. Aesthetics reception. 5. Aesthetics in the ancient Greece. 6. Aesthetics in the middle ages. 7. Aesthetics and theory of art in the renaissance. 8. Aesthetics and theory of art in the 17th century. 9. Aesthetics and theory of art in the 18th century. 10. Aesthetics and theory of art in the 19th century. 11. Aesthetics and theory of art in the 20th century. 12. Postmodernism: changes in the arts and its reception in the postmodern era.

Learning outcomes

Students will be familiar with the development of views on beauty and art; they will be acquainted with the interdisciplinary nature of aesthetics and general theory of art as well as with the terminological issues. They will be familiar with the criteria of the evaluation of a work of art or other type of an art object and will be able to interpret a work of art as an expression of a certain time period. Students will gain knowledge in dealing with general categories of philosophical nature.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance, Seminar Work

The seminar part of the course is evaluated according to the knowledge of the compulsory literature selected by students from a reading list of the works considered to be the most important ones in the history of aesthetics and theory of art. The final exam itself verifies knowledge and understanding of the issues discussed in the lectures and in the basic literature.
