Course content
1. Diploma thesis at the Department of Musicology, Philosophical Faculty of Palacky University Olomouc, from the content point of view. 2. Diploma thesis at the Department of Musicology, Philosophical Faculty of Palacky University Olomouc, from the formal point of view. 3. Examples of the acceptable and of the unacceptable topics of diploma theses from musical historiography, theory of music, musical aesthetics and other disciplines of musicology. ?International? and regional topics. 4. Examples of the good and successful bachelor theses defended at the Department of Musicology, Philosophical Faculty of Palacky University Olomouc, and at other departments of Musicology in the Czech Republic in the last decade. Examples of the less successful or not defended diploma theses. 5. The Structure of the Diploma Thesis. Preamble, Introduction, State of Sources and Literature, Main Thematic Chapters and Subheads, Conclusion, Resume (in Czech, English and German), Appendices, List of Sources and Literature, Indexes (personal, subject, local etc.) 6. Work with Sources. Music archives and museums, interviews with contemporary witnesses. 7. Work with literature in Czech and in foreign languages. Requirements of a scientific publication. 8. Work with daily press as with literature and a source. 9. The most important Czech and international encyclopaedias of music and terminological dictionaries as the sources of knowledge of music history and theory. 10. Literature about musicology, sheet music and musical records stored in the Central Library of Palacky University in Zbrojnice, in the Research Library in Olomouc, in the National Library of the Czech Republic in Prague, in the Library of Congress in Washington etc. 11. Musical resources from the collections of the Czech Museum of Music, of the State District Archive Olomouc, from the regional archives and museums, or the inheritance of family members. 12. Language aspect of a scientific text, musical terminology, standard language, scientific accuracy vs. comprehensibility and readability, integrity of scientism and popularization. Active participation and presentation (max. 5 pages) followed by a class discussion about the content, methodological and formal questions regarding the presented text is required.

Learning outcomes
Thesis Seminar 1 for the third year students of the bachelor program. In this seminar, methodological, pragmatic and definitional questions emerging during the process of writing bachelor theses are discussed. Active participation and presentation (diploma thesis project of max. 5 pages) followed by a class discussion about the content, methodological and formal questions regarding the presented text is required. Class discussion is lead by the teacher of the seminar.
1. Student has knowledge of music history and theory from the selected thematic field of the diploma thesis. 2. Student is able to work with literature he studied and is able to evaluate the preserved resources related to the selected thematic field of the diploma thesis. 3. Student is able to think critically and to come to his own conclusions regarding particular sections of the thematic field.
Prerequisites
Selecting the topic of the bachelor thesis.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance, Analysis of Creative works (Music, Pictorial,Literary)

Active participation (5 pages long text) and a discussion about the work preparation, active participation during semester in the seminar. Attendance at least 75%. 1. Evaluation of the state of the most important domestic literature used for the diploma thesis (2-4 standard pages). 2. Evaluation of the state of the most important literature in foreign language used for the diploma thesis (2-4 standard pages). 3. Evaluation of the state of the sources for the diploma thesis (2-4 standard pages).
