Topics: 1. Sacred Music as a genre and type, terminological definition 2.3. History of Sacred Music, 4. The liturgical music of the Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox rite, 5. Catholic Mass, text component, 6. oratorio and cantata - genre definition, 7. other genres of sacred music, Passion, Te Deum and Magnificat, Stabat Mater, spiritual song, 8. major works of sacred music from the Baroque period, idiomatic and stylistic characteristics, analysis of Bach's Hohe Messe and Handel's Messiah, 9. The key works from the classical period, analysis of Haydn's Creation, Mozart's Requiem and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, 10. The major works from Romantic period, analysis of Berlioz's Requiem, Brahms German Requiem, Dvořák's Requiem and Verdi's Requiem, 11. The major works of the 20th century, the analysis of Britten's War Requiem, Penderecki´s Passion of Luke and Paert´s Berliner Messe, 12. spiritual music and present, the works of Poulenck, Honegger, Stravinsky and others.

Reliable orientation in the historical, aesthetic, theoretical and functional characteristics of sacred music as a specific musical genre and type. The subject shows the main bodies of sacred music and demonstrates their musical structure changes during the past centuries. It also seeks to present the latest trends in the composition of the area.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam
1. Analysis of a particular musical work, formal and tectonic analysis. The time range of presentations, including listening to the selected section of the track: 30 min. 2. The student has to demonstrate a solid understanding of the issues within the specified substance.
