Course content
Relatively closed section of Musical history is classified in detail. Terminology issues (classicism, romanticism, realism, impressionism, expressionism, etc.) are discussed. Interpretation of the 19th century music reflects a stylistic as well as a geographical point of view. 1/ Romanticism, Beethoven in the 19th-century music 2/ Song 3/ Symphony 4/ Symphonic poem 5/ Opera in Italy 6/ Opera in France 7/ Opera in Germany 8/ Chamber music 9/ Mass, Oratorio, Cantata 10/ R. Verdi 12/ Russia 13/ Poland, Norsemen and the other national schools 14/Symphony, chamber music, song in the Czech music 15/ Opera, melodrama in the Czech music 16/ Tristan's generation 17/ Opéra lyrique, verismo 18/ Impressionism 19/ The Era of the year 1900 20/ The problem of virtuosity, violins, piano, etc., performance

Learning outcomes
The course will acquaint students with historical conditions of the 19th-century music culture. Social background of composers and performers as well as the musical needs of the public will be also reflected. Typical structural elements of the 19th-century music will be presented using the methods of musical analysis of selected works.
Course graduate will acquire knowledge of different evolutionary streams of the 19th-century music (e.g., symphony, song, musical theatre). Students will be able to compare different musical styles and genres of the 19th-century music as well.
Prerequisites
Approval of the D19-1 course is required as well as a solid knowledge of operatic, symphonic, chamber and song output in the years 1790-1850.

Oral exam
