Course content

The lecture combines a genre-based approach with insights into the contributions of individual composers. The various topics are presented in the form of repertoire explorations. 1. Introduction - definition of the period, key characteristics 2. The origins of opera, the Florentine Camerata (Monteverdi) 3. Oratorio (Carissimi) 4. French musical theatre genres (Lully) 5. Opera seria (Handel) 6. Concerto grosso (Corelli) 7. Sonata (Telemann) 8. Suite (Couperin) 9. Solo concerto (Vivaldi) 10. Catholic church music (Caldara) 11. Protestant church music (Bach) 12. Czech Baroque music in a European context (Zelenka)

Learning outcomes
|
The mission of the lecture is to introduce to the students the stylistic and developmental trends in European music in the 17th and 18 century.
Obtaining of the reliable orientation in the historic, stylish, functional, aesthetic and theoretical issues of music 17th and 18 century.

The course is intended for upper-year students, a prerequisite is successful completion of the course "An Overview of the History of Music".
