1. Timeline of Irish music in history 2. Definitions of Irish music and its relation to other activities in Ireland 3. Early history of Irish music (to c1600) 4. Irish music in the 'Anglo-Irish' period (c1600c1900) 5. Organisations and societies associated with Irish music 6. Composition and structures of Irish music 7. Instruments and performers (i): 'string' family 8. Performance contexts (i): communal activities 9. Instruments and performers (ii): 'wind' family 10. Performance contexts (ii): festivals and competitions 11. Media and the dissemination of Irish music 12. Irish music, present and future

Learning outcomes
This module surveys Irish music as a national and international phenomenon. Lectures will trace its emergence and development in the context of significant events in Irish history, also consider prominent individuals and groups who have contributed to the state of Irish music today.
From a range of printed and aural sources, students will be equipped with an understanding of the attributes and conditions which inform Irish music.
Prerequisites
Students should be familiar in a general way with the qualities and circumstances of Czech traditional/folk music; this knowledge will provide a useful perspective and enhance their ability for a comparative evaluation of the material.
