Thematic areas (the order of topics in the teaching is based on the current situation, agreement with students, etc.): 1. Introductory lesson, introduction to basic literature 2. History of censuses and population registration in the Czech lands, census records, their availability and form 3. Practical work with digitized census records, attempt to microhistory a selected family 4. Practical work with digitised census records, an attempt at a microhistory of a selected family (continued) 5. Typical source of genealogical research - civil registers - their historical development, current availability, method of citation 6. Practical work with digitized civil registers from different periods 7. Practical work with digitized registers from different periods (completion), completing and refining the microhistory of the family created according to census records using the knowledge from registers 8. Basic concepts of genealogy, used symbols, types of genealogical sequences - derivation, descent, kinship and ancestry tables (partly repetition of the PVH lectures for the first year) 9. Learning outcomes |
The aim of the course is to acquaint the student of history with the basic methods and sources of genealogical research so that he/she will be able to use them practically in the future. At the same time, students will be encouraged to further reflect on the information obtained and to interpret it in a broader context.
Knowledge of general methodology and procedures in genealogy research. Student is able to use and cite register books as primary source of such research. In case register books are not available, student is able to at least partially replace them with information from other kinds of sources. |
Prerequisites |
An interest in the subject and palaeographical knowledge at the level of a graduate of the 1st year Auxiliary History course (Neo-Gothic script) is assumed.

Attendance at least 80%. Preparation to classes. Seminar work (at least 5 pages) about topic chosen at the beginning of the semester. |
