Course content
|
The course is part of the whole range of the seminars on the 19th-century history which are mandatory for undergraduate students of history. The attention will be paid to the fundametal processes of the long 19th century, such as liberalism, feminism and colonialism. Precisely, attention will be paid mainly to the French Revolution, political and economical liberalism, emancipation of women, abolitionism. The events in Western Europe (France, Britain), Bohemia, Asia (Japan and China), America (Reconstruction of the South), Africa (colonialism) will be studied. Every topic is based on the work with a primary source or a secondary literature which the student must read before coming to the class. HF

Learning outcomes
|
The course aims to acquaint students with the basic features of political, social and economical development in the long 19th century.
Students will deepen their understanding of chosen topics concerning the political, economical and social development of Europe, USA, Japan, China and Africa in the long 19th century. They will get familiar with primary sources important for their understanding of the period and they will learn how to analyze them.

Prerequisites
|
Students are supposed to have basic factual knowledge of the 19th-century history. Students should have at least a passive knowledge of English. HF

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Written exam
Credit requirements: participation in the classes and class discussions, thourough studying of the reading requirements, presentation, written test at the end of the semester. HF
