Course content
The aim of the course is to provide students a basic overview of a prehistory and history of latin letters, since its beginnings to the end of the 15th century, i.e. scripts of antiquity, so called national scripts, carolingian minuscule and gothic scripts. There is a characteristic mentioned for every type of these scripts (its origin, development, function, basic signs), so a student is able to identify different examples (type of script, significant signs, date and place of writing of text). The aim of the seminar is to strengthen an ability of a student to read texts written in carolingian minuscule and in different types of gothic scripts. PZ

Learning outcomes
The aim of lectures is to give a student basic overview of a development of the latin script, since its ancient origins to the beginning of the early modern era. This overview is purposed to teach a student to determine particular historical text and to indicate its age. The aim of the seminar is to teach students to make transliteration of texts written in Carolingian minuscule and to make a transcription (in case of czech texts) of texts written in gothic script. Students have an overview of the development of the paleography as the field and its related disciplines. They also have a knowledge about a development of a latin script in the antiquity and in the middle age. He will learn how to make a transliteration and a transcription of texts from 10th to 15th century. PZ

To complete the lesson Paleography I.1. PZ

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Student performance

Active participation in lessons. Student will receive credits for a transcription of a czech texts written in gothic script and for a transliteration of a latin text written in carolingian minuscule. Oral exam will be base on an identification of three texts written in three different scripts. PZ
