Course content
History, basic terms and literature will be introduced in first lessons, watermarks and its study as well. Following lessons will deal with writing substances, writing-kits and writing styles - it brings first notions of the history of the Latin script from its beginning till the end of 15th century. In seminars students will read texts written in carolingian minuscule and various types of gothic scripts. Reading samples will be supplemented with explanation of the difficulties students come across with (reading, transcipt of the text, ligatures etc.), the development of numerals etc. PZ

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to teach students basic summary of a terminology and focus of a paleography, also to teach about division of paleography, basic literature and reading books available in Czech republic. The attention will be also paid to the origin of latin letters, evolution of an alphabet, to numbers, ligatures and abbreviations and also to writing tools and to archaeological and paleographic writing substances. The aim of the seminar is to teach students to make transliteration of texts written in Carolingian minuscule and to make transliteration of transcription (in case of czech texts) of texts written in gothic script. Students have an overview of the development of the paleography as the research field and its related disciplines. He will learn how to make a transliteration and a transcription of texts from 10th to 15th century. PZ

Student performance

Active participation in lessons. Student will receive credits for a transcription of a czech texts written in gothic script and for a transliteration of a latin text written in carolingian minuscule. PZ
