Course content
Lecture series I (Paštrnák, Monday) focuses on main issues of cultural, economic, social, and political history of ancient Greece and Rome. 1. Antiquity within us? (terminology, chronology, relevance, approaches) 2. Geographic and climatic conditions 3. Agriculture, what a dirty job? Economics (agriculture, crafts, trade) 4. Who was a Greek and Roman? Citizens and the others (women, foreigners, barbarians) 5. Slavery: practice, philosophy and its (ab)uses 6. What's the best form of government? Political systems and ideology 7. War and peace, international relations 8. By Hercules! Gods, religions, and cults 7. "That woman has something terribly manly in herself." Sexualities a gender 8. Urbanisation, globalisation, and their problems 9. Crisis. Fall or continuity? Lecture series II (Pokorná, Thursday) 1. Classical tradition 2. Source of Greek art and culture in the Aegean world 3. Etrusco-Roman continuity in architecture and painting 4. Greek sense of order and symmetry 5. Art as a tool of propaganda 6. Thematic repertory of Greek art 7. Thematic repertory of Roman art 8. Development of classical sculpture and the issue of originals, replicas, and copies 9. Nudity in classical art 10. Polychromy in Greek sculpture 11. Origins of Greek urbanism, development of Hellenistic cities 12. Roman provincial art 13. Antiquity and Czech culture Further information will be disclosed during the introductory session and accessible via a Moodle e-learning course.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with selected themes from cultural, economic and social history of the antiquity.
Students will receive an overview of the cultural, political, economic and social history of the antiquity. PZ
Prerequisites
To complete the course, a student must first successfully complete History of Antiquity Workshop 1 (Greece) or History of Antiquity Workshop 2 (Rome).

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam

Exam requirements: discussion about reading list and about a question related to the history of the antiquity. PZ
