Learning outcomes
The seminar The foreign policy of the United States - from Jefferson to Trump summarizes the evolution and changes in the American foreign affairs. It starts with isolationism typical for the 19th century that formed the ties to the other American neighbors. Afterward, the intentions of the Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson for the U.S. to play a significant global role are described. These efforts manifested itself later after the World War II. The last part of the course is dedicated to the present foreign policy of the United States including the current strategies of the incumbent Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Bieden. The dynamics of the course is such that students prepare a paper on each of the topics, present it in class and then we will discuss it.
The main intention of this course is to present to the students the most important milestones of the American foreign relations of the last three centuries from a historical perspective. There are no perquisites necessary as one of the intentions of the course is to broaden commonly known facts or acquired high school knowledge. During the lectures we are not going to focus us that much on historical dates or facts, instead, we are going to examine wide/global coherence and contemporary context. Part of the course is also a team project and its presentation in class, where students will practice their research abilities and their interpretation skills. Among the methodological instrument, they should use will be bibliographical research, heuristics and hermeneutics, evaluation of sources, critical reflection and synthesis ability. After the course, students should be able to understand and evaluate the processes of evolution and change of the foreign policy of the United States. They should interpret these not only as a series of historical events but incorporate them into the global context as well. Also, they will exercise soft skills like teamwork and principles of historical research with its integral ability of critical thinking best described by the famous phrase of René Descartes: Cogito ergo sum.
