Course content
|
Seminar and lecture programme: 1. Review and further development of knowledge of the history of Latin script; reading a text written in Gothic half-cursive script. 2. Transcription rules for medieval Czech texts. 3. Practising transcription rules and reading Czech texts written in Gothic cursive script. 4. Nineteenth-century parish register entries. Methods of presenting genealogical results (ancestral charts, descendant charts and pedigrees, kinship tables); genealogical handbooks, dictionaries, and software. 5. Seventeenth- and eighteenth-century parish register entries and supplementary parish register records. 6. Ligatures and types of abbreviations in medieval texts; reading a Latin text written in Carolingian minuscule. 7. Abbreviation marks in Latin texts; reading further Latin texts. 8. Reading Latin liturgical books; stages in the development of Carolingian minuscule. 9. Musical sources from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries I - condition, structure, and identification of the author, copyist, and owner. 10. Musical sources from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries II. 11. Catalogues of books and musical sources. Editorial practice - citation and description of a specific source. 12. Inventories of musical instruments. Editorial practice - creating a critical apparatus.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to deepen students' existing knowledge of the auxiliary sciences of history. The seminars will therefore focus on practical tasks related to the identification and interpretation of specific Early Modern written records connected with the history of music. In this way, students will further develop their skills in identifying manuscript sources and reading Neo-Gothic scripts. Particular attention will be paid to reading and transcribing Czech and Latin medieval texts written in Carolingian minuscule and Gothic scripts. During the semester, students will also be introduced to basic concepts from other auxiliary sciences of history in connection with the sources under study, with particular emphasis on historical metrology, codicology, and epigraphy.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to read texts written in Neo-Gothic cursive script, Carolingian minuscule, and Gothic scripts. They will be able to identify, organise, and describe manuscript musical sources from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They will have a basic knowledge of the description of specific sources relevant to the history of music and of the possibilities for making such sources available through scholarly editions. They will also be familiar with genealogical sources and will be able to read, cite, and further interpret them.

Completion of the course Auxiliary Sciences of History - Musicology 1 is required.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Student performance, Written exam
Attendance of at least 85% and active participation in seminars. Completion of homework assignments in the online application (at least 90%). Credit test (transcription of a text written in Neo-Gothic script, transcription of a Czech text written in Neo-Gothic script, and transliteration of a Latin text written in Carolingian minuscule). Colloquium (oral discussion of sources relating to the history of music).
