Course content
|
Lecture and seminar programme: 1. Brief introduction to the auxiliary sciences of history. 2. The development of Latin script. Introduction to reading Gothic half-cursive script. 3. The concepts of transliteration and transcription. General rules for the transcription of texts. 4. Introduction to reading Czech and German Neo-Gothic texts. 5. Transcription rules for Early Modern Czech texts. 6. Historical chronology - types of calendars and reforms of the calendar used in the Czech lands. 7. Historical chronology - the ecclesiastical calendar and feast days of the Sanctorale. 8. Historical chronology - the ecclesiastical calendar, the liturgical year, and feast days of the Temporale. 9. Historical chronology - practising the dating of historical documents; dating in Early Modern sources. 10. The liturgy of the Catholic Church - liturgical books: the Liturgy of the Hours (breviary), the Mass (missal), and the sacraments (ritual and pontifical). 11. Genealogy - basic symbols and methods used in genealogy; digitised sources - parish registers and population censuses. 12. Archives in the Czech Republic - types of archival fonds held in archives, archival finding aids, digital archives, and methods of citing sources.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students of musicology to the basics of the auxiliary sciences of history, with particular emphasis on those that can be practically applied in their scholarly work. These include, in particular, Early Modern palaeography, with a focus on reading and transcribing Czech and German texts written in Neo-Gothic cursive script; codicology, with a focus on liturgical manuscripts (including an introduction to the liturgy of the Catholic Church and liturgics); historical chronology, including practical exercises in converting feast days of the ecclesiastical calendar; and genealogy, including an introduction to the archival system in the Czech Republic.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to read and transliterate texts written in Neo-Gothic cursive script and convert dates from the ecclesiastical calendar into the modern dating system. They will have a basic knowledge of the liturgy of the Catholic Church and the books associated with it. They will be familiar with the basic sources used in genealogical research, particularly those that have already been digitised, and will be able to use them and compile the information obtained in the form of a genealogical lineage or pedigree. They will have an overview of archives in the Czech Republic and the basic types of archival fonds held there.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Student performance, Written exam
Attendance of at least 85% and active participation in seminars. Completion of homework assignments in the online application (at least 90%). Colloquium in the form of a written test (transcription of a Czech text written in Neo-Gothic script and conversion of historical dates from the ecclesiastical calendar).
