Course content
|
Lecture programme: Introduction to the auxiliary sciences of history. Palaeography and the development of Latin script. Introduction to reading Neo-Gothic cursive script (the Kurrent alphabet). Working with the Palaeographical Reader. The concepts of transcription and transliteration. Transcription rules for Early Modern Czech. Historical chronology - types of calendars. Historical chronology - the liturgical year and types of feast days. Historical chronology - feast days of the Sanctorale and their conversion. Historical chronology - feast days of the Temporale and their conversion. The liturgy of the Catholic Church - liturgical books: the Liturgy of the Hours (breviary), the Mass (missal), and the administration of the sacraments (ritual and pontifical). Archives in the Czech Republic - types of archival fonds held in archives and archival finding aids. Digital archives and methods of citing sources. Seminars will focus primarily on practising the reading of Neo-Gothic script and converting feast days of the Sanctorale and Temporale.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students of musicology to the basics of auxiliary sciences of history, with particular emphasis on those that can be practically applied in their scholarly work. These include, in particular, Early Modern palaeography; codicology, with a focus on liturgical manuscripts (including an introduction to the liturgy of the Catholic Church and liturgics); and historical chronology, with an emphasis on the ecclesiastical calendar and the conversion of feast days in the Sanctorale and Temporale. The course also includes an introduction to the archival system in the Czech Republic.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to read texts written in Neo-Gothic script, particularly cursive script, and convert dates from the ecclesiastical calendar into the modern dating system. They will have a basic knowledge of the liturgy of the Catholic Church and the manuscripts associated with it, and will be familiar with the archival system of the Czech Republic.
