Course content |
Contents: 1. Introduction to problematics - history of research, list of basic literature, terminology, application of historic geography and landscape archaeology in detection of past communications. 2. Types of transport and evolution of means of transport - land transport, navigation, ships, riding and hauling animals, carriages, navigation tools. 3. Transport constructions and constructions linked to communications - road construction, gates, bridges and fords, taverns, guarding points, customs houses, small sacral monuments, execution places at roads, hospices. 4.-5. Methods of detection and reconstruction of old communications - predictive (historical-geographical, computer), practical (rule of straight line and dry track), new methods (LLS). 6. Daily travelling. 7. Long distance trade in medieval Europe and its relation to Czech lands - routes of long distance trade, emporia, travellers and pilgrims, imports of artefacts as evidence of long distance transport 8. Trade in prehistory and the Middle Ages of Czech lands - methods of prehistoric trade, markets and marketplaces in the Middle Ages, merchant houses, artefactual sources (balances and weights, styluses). 9.-10. Tranport in prehistory and the Middle Ages of Czech Lands - routes in the Palaeolithic and agricultural periods of prehistory, roads in medieval written sources, most important land routes and their connection with long distance roads, network of communicatiuns and towns 11.-13. Examples of investigation of past communications in Czech lands - Golden road, Osek Mt., Jívová track, Prague, Ore Mts., Drahany Highland.

Subject Transport and travelling in Czech lands in Middle Age familiar with form of transport, travelling and distance trade in Middle Age. Subject is focused on actual methods, searching of old map and give us overview of results of research of destroyed communications.
Knowledge of archaeological problematics of selected topic. |
