Course content
|
Students are acquainted with the bone and the horn industria, its development through the prehistoric age until the early middle ages. Also the interpretation of the marks which originated from the working. The seminar will be closed by the written test.. Lecture: Bone and antler (Zeman) 1. and 2. Basic characteristics of bones, antlers and teeth of animals as raw material for the production of articles. Interpretation of traces caused not only by hand craft process. New knowledge about manufacturing of these articles and about subsequent use of bone and antler industry based on traseological studies and experiments or about paraelly made experiments (Worked Bone Research Group (WBRG) Icaza). Development of research on the BAI. 3. to 6. Study of BAI in each of archaeological cultures in chronological order from the Paleolithic to the early Middle Ages. Glass (Vostrovská, Černá) 7. and 8. Introduction to the history of glassmaking - time, place and conditions of glassmaking; different stages of development, basic terms, terminology, definitions - what is glass, raw materials (primary and auxilary), the origin and acquisition of raw materials and their impact on the quality of the glass. Sources for studying of the history of glass (written, iconographical and material). 9. and 10. Medieval glass in Europe - the roots of medieval glass manufacturing ? ancient traditions and the role of monasteries in spreading of knowledge of glass manufacturing in the interior areas; nature of the production of early medieval glass industry - assortment (typological composition and chemistry of glass); topography of glassware; organization of manufacturing and changes in production technology at the end of the early Middle Ages . 11. and 12. Czech Glass of High Middle Ages - the history of research (various stages from the late 19. century and personalities). The origins of the occurrence of medieval glass and their occurence context. Basic types of glass (hollow , window , decorative or utilitarian artifacts). Typology of glass vessels (basic types and their evolution over three centuries). The frequency of different types of glass. Its variability in dependence on the time and occurence of different environment. Question of provenance of hollow glass - basic types and variants of domestic vessels, imported glasses, the key to their recognification also results of nature-scientific methods. The quality of domestic products and their expansion into other European countries. Archaeological evidence of domestic production ? Duration of the oldest glass manufactories and their position, also their shifts within tighter production lines - the so-called ,,forest migratory smelters´´. Range of domestic glass manufactories and local specificities of each. Seminars: Practical excercising of methods of sorting of studied collections and their draw documentation. AD

Learning outcomes
|
The course introduces artifacts made of bone, antler and glass. Basic characteristics, technology of process, typology and period sorting of individual artifacts. As a part of seminars is implemented lesson of draw documentation. AD
Student gets the overview of the bone and antler industry. Also about its types and forms and about methods of its research. Student will gain abilities connected with their draw documentation. AD
